To mount a Synology drive to a PC (Windows or Mac OS) we first need to obtain the local IP address or hostname of the Synology NAS that holds the files you want to access. We can do this by logging into the web interface of the Synology NAS, clicking on Control Panel and then selecting Network.

Under the 'General' tab you'll notice a box called 'Server Name' that we can use in Windows and Mac OS to connect to this drive.

Under the 'Network Interface' tab we can also select the active connection and obtain the IP address to use too. This IP address is a good alternative if the server name or hostname doesn't work.

To connect to this Synology NAS via Windows open up a new 'File Explorer' window and in the address bar type two backslashes followed by the Server or Hostname of the Synology NAS we found earlier. Now press enter.

Some Shared Folders should now appear, but if they don't, try this process again but use the IP address instead.

You may be asked for a username and password to connect and use the username and password you use to login to the web interface. You can also create other usernames and passwords and restrict access to certain files and folders, but that's for another video.

Once successfully connected and you can see the shared folders, you can now map these to a local drive. Simply right-click the shared folder and select 'Map Network Drive'.

On Mac OS open 'Finder' and from the 'Go' menu select 'Connect to server...'.

Enter 'smb://' and then either the server / hostname of your Synology NAS or use the local IP address. Click the 'Connect' button once happy. Click the 'Connect' button once again and then enter the username and password for the Synology NAS.

If you have problems, visit the Synology NAS Control panel, select 'File Services' and ensure 'Enable SMB Service' is enabled and click 'Apply'.

Select the volumes you want to mount and then click 'OK' once done. You can now access this mounted folder on the left under 'Locations'.
