The Louisville Cardinals first-ever foray into the national spotlight of a New Year's Day bowl, facing the mighty Crimson Tide of Alabama in the Sunkist Fiesta Bowl.

The Tide's strength then (as now) was it's defense. They came into the game #3 in Total Defense and #1 in Passing Defense.

Someone forgot to give Browning Nagle the memo.

Nagle and the Cardinals shredded, gashed, and [insert emasculating verb here] the Crimson Tide's vaunted defense again and again....and before the end of the first quarter we had ourselves a 25-0 obliteration in progress.

Browning finished with 451 passing yards, a Fiesta Bowl record.
Louisville's 458 passing yards was most that Alabama had ever allowed.
Not to be outdone, Louisville's defense came up with 8 sacks, also a Fiesta Bowl record, and held the Tide to 189 yards of total offense.

Final score:
UofL 34
Bama 7

Note: as crazy as it is to believe in this day and age, the network actually cut away from the game with half a quarter left to play. The footage ends midway through the 4th as they cut to Orange Bowl coverage.
