Ladakh Statehood Protest: Why Are Thousands Of People Protesting In Ladakh In Freezing Temperatures?

Ladakh experienced a comprehensive shutdown as thousands took part in marches, advocating for statehood and constitutional protections under the sixth schedule for the Union Territory. The protests were collaboratively organized by the Leh Apex Body (LAB) and Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA), bringing together men and women who marched through the main city of Leh despite freezing temperatures. Representing the two regions of Ladakh, LAB and KDA have been pushing for statehood and Sixth Schedule status since the region's conversion into a Union Territory. In August 2021, LAB and KDA united their efforts to strengthen their demands.
