The Saharan sand viper or pygmy sand viper (Cerastes vipera) is native to the sandy Saharan Deserts of Africa, from Morocco in the west eastward to Egypt. It is well adapted to its sandy habitats. It uses its heavily keeled/serrated scales and a rocking motion to dig itself down into the sand. Its eyes are positioned on top of its head so that they can remain above the sand while its body is submerged and its tail is wiggled back and worth as a lure to attract prey. Much like Arizona's native sidewinder rattlesnake, this species uses sidewinding locomotion to navigate sandy dunes.
