In this video, I show you how to work a Folded Picot Hem. This hem is used when you want a clean and professional finish for your projects that are knit in the round. Such as socks, top-down hats, sweaters, or neck warmers.

Instead of your standard picot bind-off, this technique creates a nice, flat hem that is tacked down on the inside of your work with the use of a stretchy YO bind-off.

This hem can be created WITHOUT the stretchy bind-off but the end result will be much tighter. The stretchy bind-off helps with slipping a sock over the foot or for use on a stretchy hat brim.

This hem is worked in the round but it can easily be worked flat.

Written Instructions: (Worked over an even number of stitches)
Begin by marking the FIRST stitch of the round with a locking stitch marker. You'll be picking up a purl bump from directly above this stitch after completing your hem.

Knit 5 rounds.
Eyelet row: (YO, K2tog) to end of round.
Knit another 5 rounds.

Turn work inside out so you can see the wrong side of the fabric. Locate the stitch marker and using the right-hand needle, pick up the purl bump just below the marked stitch, (this purl bump will appear as a "smile") Inserting the tip of the right-hand needle from top to bottom through the bump and place this stitch onto the left-hand needle purlwise. YO, K2tog, pass second stitch over the first stitch. One stitch is now tacked down.
Now work this repeat: *Pick up the next purl bump ("smile") to the left of the first bump, inserting the tip of the right-hand needle from top to bottom through the bump. Place this stitch onto the left-hand needle purlwise. YO, K2tog, BO 2 sts; rep from * until all stitches are worked.

Break yarn and pull through remaining loop loosely. Use duplicate stitch to connect the last bind off loop to the first bind off loop. This technique is explained in the video.

The socks shown in this video are my Cloudbusting pattern, which will be released in mid July 2021.
