Welcome! Today I'll be restoring an old rusty ornate cast iron screen door rim lock, manufactured by Russell & Erwin in the late 1860s and into the 1870s. This little rim lock was in pretty bad shape when I got it and was caked in both rust any some extra crusty paint. That's okay, it gave me an excuse to restore some more antique hardware and an extra rusty restoration project is always enjoyable to watch haha.

I started this hardware restoration by spraying down the rusty screws with some penetrating fluid - They looked like they were going to be a hassle to remove, but luckily all came out with little effort. After fully disassembled I needed to go straight to paint stripping. Most of the paint was loosened enough by the rust that it came off with ease. Speaking of rust, now it was time for the rust removal. I use Evapo-Rust, as I can just leave parts in overnight and they'll be rust free when I get to them in the morning.

Now I started restoring the parts in small groups. I started by polishing up the brass springs. Next up in the restoration was the bent spindle - A quick hammering and it was on to one of my favorite parts of restorations, bluing steel. With that done I went ahead and quickly restored the screws. The got some sanding and bluing. The case cover, latch and switch were sanded, polished and lacquered. Many unplanted hardware items were originally lacquered.

Next up in the rim lock repair was the rosette. It was sanded, polished, lacquered and then both the back and recessed areas were painted black. Painting the backs and recessed areas was very common in hardware from this time period. The door knobs were treated the same way, thou I decided to repair (or I suppose remove) some excess metal that had been left over from when they were cast. The case was the same story - Sanded, polished, lacquered and the (like in many of my restoration videos) the recessed areas painted black.

I wasn't entirely satisfied with the tint of the lacquer for this project, but I like to change ratios up each project to test the strength, longevity and color of the tint so I can perfect it in future restorations. Although not a perfect restoration, I was pretty happy with how this turned out - Considering how it looked when I started it really is a proper trash to treasure restoration, and it's great to see how an old rim lock like this once looked back when it was new!
