Swiss German Alemannic Lake Zurich Zürisee; German: Zürichsee Romansh: A lake in Switzerland known as Lai da Turitgis located southeast of the city of Zürich. The term "Lake Zurich" or "Zürichsee" can be used to refer to the entire lake or just the portion of the lake downstream of the Seedamm at Rapperswil. The term "Obersee" or "Upper Lake" can be used to refer to the portion of the lake upstream of Rapperswil.
The river Linth originates in the Glarus Alps and flows into Lake Zurich. It was diverted into Lake Walen by the Escher canal, which was completed in 1811, and its waters are transported to the east end of Lake Zurich by the Linth canal, which was completed in 1816. At the lake's north-west end (Quaibrücke), the waters of the Lake of Zurich flow through the city of Zürich. The Seedamm, a partially artificial causeway and bridge, crosses a narrow point of the lake carrying a railway line and road from Rapperswil to Pfäffikon. The culmination of the lake's drainage basin is the Tödi, which is 3,614 meters above sea level No streams of significance flow into the lake other than the Linth. The eastern segment of the lake is known as the Obersee "upper lake". West of this dam lie the little islands of Lützelau and Ufenau, where in 1523 Ulrich von Hutten took asylum and passed on. The Au peninsula, which is located in the village of Au between Wädenswil and Horgen, is another popular tourist destination. Both shores are well-cultivated and fertile.
