New Zealand's Lake Taupo is associated with some of the strongest volcanic eruptions to have occurred in recent history. A supervolcanic eruption occurred here at some point around 26,000 years ago, and the most strongest volcanic eruption within the past 5000 years also took place here at some point around 200 BC. In recent times, this volcano has been replenishing it's magma reserves, and the ground has been slowly inflating as a result of this. Volcanic earthquakes associated with volcanism tend to occur in swarms and that holds true to the event the prompted New Zealand to, for the first time in history, raise the volcanic alert level of Lake Taupo from a 0, to a 1. After 700 earthquakes have occurred beneath the lake, at a depth of between 4 to 13km just this year alone.

These earthquakes are worrisome primarily because they are directly connected to the Lake Taupo magma chamber, and they generally occur when magma is on the move. Either to the chamber... or worse, to the surface, in the form of an eruption...
