This video demonstrates how to adjust total indicator runout (TIR) for a mandrel ring reamer assembly before reaming a hole. The cutting ring style reamers are ideal for large diameter holes because they eliminate the need to replace a large solid reamer, reducing waste. The unique design allows for diameter expansion to accommodate for cutting edge wear. ALVAN reamers hold tight tolerances while improving the surface finish of the hole.

STEP 1: Place the tool into the machine spindle. Make contact with the four radial adjustment screws in a concentric fashion.

This results in equal pressure surrounding the tool.

STEP 2: Swipe the dial indicator around the ground portion of the arbor near the coolant outlet holes to verify the total indicator runout (or TIR).

Tighten the radial adjusting screw closest to the high point. Continue to do this until the TIR is five tenths of an inch or 0.012 millimeters or less. This will ensure the TIR check on the cutting teeth will be true. It also indicates the arbor is running true to the shank.

You may need to loosen the radial screws if necessary to adjust for TIR.

STEP 3: Once the TIR is checked on the arbor, check the TIR on the cutting teeth.

Rotate the tool counterclockwise to avoid chipping the cutting teeth.

Tighten the radial adjusting screw closest to the high point. Continue to do this until the TIR is five tenths of an inch or 0.012 millimeters or less.

STEP 4: Fully tighten the clamping screw. During the tightening, the tool body may shift slightly. Repeat the TIR check on the cutting teeth, and adjust as necessary.
