"A' Seòladh Gu Cogadh (Sailing to War)" was composed by Donald Shaw and Charlie Mckerron of the Celtic group "Capercaillie". It was used in the charming television adaptation of Finlay J. Macdonald's book "Crowdie and Cream", ("Gruth is Uachdar"), for which Shaw and Mckerron composed all the music. It is played here by the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra.
The video clips are taken from the 1971 British television film adaptation of Paul Gallico's moving novella "The Snow Goose" which deals, in part, with the Dunkirk evacuation. The film stars Richard Harris and Jenny Agutter. My apologies for the quality of the film clips, but they are the best available and I particularly wanted to feature this film in the video.
The Little Ships of Dunkirk were about 850 private boats that sailed from Ramsgate in England to Dunkirk in northern France between 26th May and 4th June 1940 as part of Operation Dynamo, helping to rescue more than 336,000 British, French, and other Allied soldiers who were trapped on the beaches at Dunkirk during the Second World War.
