Stenostomum grande, a microturbellarian (very
Stenostomum grande, a microturbellarian (very small flatworm). collected from a roadside ditch in Wakefield, Quebec. Thanks to Dr. Masatsugu Yamazaki for help in identification.
The specimen was roughly 1.2 to 1.4 mm long, when extended.
Like all members of the genus, it possesses paired ciliated pits, resembling elongated nostrils, on either side of its head. The dentate lobes of the brain are very distinct, and the large mass of pendulous glands around the pharynx are easily seen. I was unable to identify light-refracting bodies around the posterior lobes of the brain, however Dr. Yamazaki, who has a special interest in the microturbellarians (masatsuguyamazaki) pointed out the presence of a pharyngeal sphincter, which confirms the identification.
