Aristotle's metaphysics involves the study of 'substance', or 'ousia', which refers to individual things that exist independently and can undergo change.
The theory of 'hylomorphism' argues that substances are composites of form (qualities that define a thing) and matter (what it is made of).
Aristotle proposes four causes to fully understand a thing: the material cause (what it's made of), the formal cause (its structure or essence), the efficient cause (the source of its motion or rest), and the final cause (its purpose, goal, or end).
He introduces the concepts of 'potentiality' and 'actuality' to explain how things change and evolve.
The idea of the Prime Mover, or God, is central to Aristotle's metaphysics, serving as the unchanging mover that initiates motion in the universe.
Aristotle's metaphysics also explores universal truths and abstract concepts, such as being, identity, change, time, etc.
His metaphysical ideas are interconnected with other philosophical areas like ethics and philosophy of mind.
He argues for the primacy of the actual over the potential, which also informs his ethical theory.
His concept of substance plays a role in his philosophy of mind; he sees the soul as the form of the body.
He views the cosmos as an interconnected system where each substance and the cosmos itself has its own intrinsic purpose.
Despite his metaphysical explorations, Aristotle remained deeply rooted in empirical observation and study of the natural world.
His metaphysical system continues to influence contemporary philosophical thought, providing tools for understanding the world and laying the groundwork for subsequent philosophical systems.
