As New York University released Early Decision notifications to Class of 2020 applicants, Crystal Artis, Associate Director for Diversity Initiatives, was invited to hand deliver a surprise offer of admission to Ricardo Alvarado, a high school senior at the Collegiate Institute for Math and Science in the Bronx.

Ricardo was admitted to The Arthur O. Eve Higher Education Opportunity Program (HEOP) at New York University. HEOP is a New York state-funded program in partnership with NYU that helps economically and educationally disadvantaged students. Their primary role is to provide students with academic support through non-credit classes, professional and peer tutoring and counseling that are designed to ensure students' full success at NYU. Through HEOP, these students are able to receive a full-need financial aid package that can make attending NYU a reality.

The Collegiate Institute for Math and Science is a College Bound Initiative (CBI) school. CBI places full-time college guidance experts in New York City public schools to work one-on-one with every student as early as the sixth grade.
