The story of Joaquim Cruz
The story of Joaquim Cruz is one of the most inspirational to ever occur. Born into deep poverty in an industrial town in Southern Brazil, Cruz took to the track at very young age and showed amazing results. At just 15, he had already run a 1:51 for the 800 meters, and by 18, he had broken the world junior record, running a time of 1:44.30 seconds. 2 years later, he had great success at the University of Oregon in 1983, winning the 800 meters in dominant fashion. After a stellar showing at the World Championships, the 20-year-old Cruz achieved a bronze medal at his very first international championships, however, just 1 year later in 1984, he would emerge as one of the all-time greats in his event, running some of the most unbelievable races in the history of the 800.
