Heated Chemotherapy Treatment: How It Works

Dr. Joel Baumgartner, a surgical oncologist at UC San Diego Health's Moores Cancer Center, describes the "chemo bath" procedure known as HIPEC, or heated intraperitoneal chemoperfusion. The treatment is performed at the end of surgery to remove abdominal tumors, with the goal of killing any remaining cancer cells that cannot be seen. Moores Cancer Center's team is one of the most experienced in the world at this procedure.
