The Food! A most important piece of human sustenance!
While most of us don’t have to think twice about where our food comes from as we are accustomed to having full courses meal every day. But the same isn’t the case for most others, who look forward to having at least one full-course meal a day. It becomes even more important that the growing children of the country are entitled to this luxury.
Akshaya Patra, meaning inexhaustible vessel in Sanskrit, is a home-grown name, that has dedicated its entire existence and lived up to the meaning of its name, making sure to feed as many kids of the country as possible. A non-profit organisation, headquartered in Bangalore that began this amazing mid-meal program in various Government and Government aided primary schools of India more than a decade ago in the year 2000, serving 1500 children in 5 schools. It has now remarkably grown up to serve over 2 million children across 22,367 schools spread all over the country.
Their growth has been supported by the Government of India, various State Governments, corporates, individual donors, and well-wishers, making them a one-of-a-kind organisation working full-blown towards eliminating classroom hunger. Alongside serving mid-day meals, Akshaya Patra also aims at countering malnutrition and supporting the right to education of socio-economically disadvantaged children.
