An off-duty Hoover police officer was arrested Friday morning in Birmingham’s Lakeview District after an Uber driver said he was accosted by the officer.
Adam Grant Shipley is charged with public intoxication, harassment, and third-degree criminal mischief. Those charges are misdemeanors.
Shipley was booked into the Birmingham City Jail at 3:52 a.m. and has since been released on bond.
Hoover police Chief Nick Derzis said Shipley is on administrative leave pending ongoing investigations.
Uber driver Brantley Gerhardt, 34, told AL.com he was parked in front of Tin Roof when Shipley, who appeared intoxicated, bumped into his side-view mirror, damaging it.
Shipley then opened the door on Gerhardt’s vehicle and showed him his Hoover police badge and said a few things. A friend of Shipley’s apologized to Gerhardt and then started to lead Shipley from the scene.
Gerhardt said he got out of his vehicle and told Shipley he needed to fix his mirror.  Video courtesy of: Brantley Gerhardt.
