In this video, we're walking through hypovolemia and hypervolemia and some critical thinking points you need to know about for nursing school.

Hypovolemia: When there is not enough circulating blood volume.

Hypervolemia: When there is too much fluid circulating and the body cannot compensate for it.

Hypovolemia signs and symptoms:
Dry mucous membranes, and excessive thirst because of the decrease in water in the body.

Postural hypotension: Less circulating volume equals less pressure.

Dark urine: less overall volume, so less water to dilute the urine.

Increased heart rate: Happens with more severe hypovolemia. The body is trying to compensate and the blood vessels to vasoconstrict to try to create more pressure to circulate the blood to more areas

Elevated hematocrit because the blood is more concentrated because there is less excess fluid.

Hypovolemia Interventions: oral rehydration, or increasing fluid intake, IV hydration with an isotonic solution. Remember, our goal here is to increase the circulating blood volume so that more blood can get to the organs to oxygenate them.

We know that hypervolemia means that there's too much blood volume, it could also be called fluid overload.

Hypervolemia signs or symptoms:
Edema: especially in the ankles or hands, weight gain since there's more fluid staying in the body, and veins that look and feel very full.

Crackles in the lungs: or even pulmonary edema from the fluid not having anywhere else to go with more severe hypervolemia.

Decreased hematocrit: because the blood is more dilute from the increased overall fluid volume.

Hypervolemia Interventions: The body is trying to get rid of the excess fluid. In order to do this, we would need to give a medication to diuresis the body… diuretics.

Those are the key critical thinking points you need to know about  for  both hypovolemia and hypervolemia in nursing school. It's not enough to just memorize what hypovolemia and hypervolemia are in nursing, but you'll actually have to apply that information and critically think about it, and that's what we just walked through, step by step.

Great job, friend!
