Wine Review: Domaine de Villaine Saint Aubin 1er Cru Les Perrieres 2014

Today our Wine Director, David Allen MW, takes the opportunity to taste a White Burgundy produced by one of France's most acclaimed winemakers. Aubert de Villaine was the director of the legendary Domaine de La Romanée-Conti from 1974 until he stepped down earlier this year. Domaine de Villaine is located in Bouzeron in the Côte Chalonnaise region. Aubert de Villaine and his wife Pamela have the property as their "home" estate. The domaine has several climats in the communes of Bouzeron, Rully, Mercurey and Santenay. These are planted to Aligoté (for which it has a good reputation), Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The domaine also holds multiple Premier Cru vineyard plots including Grésigny in Rully, Les Perrières in Saint-Aubin and Les Passetemps in Santenay. The estate practices organic agriculture. Grapes are harvested by hand and vinified naturally. De Villaine ages its wines in tuns, oak casks and tanks, or a mixture of all three depending on the wine and the vintage. The majority of these oak casks are older oak so as to give a purer expression of each wine.
