What Sasy Mankan Says with His New Song "Baradaran-e Leila"

Iranian rapper Sasy Mankan released a provocative teaser for his new single “Baradaran-e Leila,” indicating he remains intent on challenging norms in Iranian society. Inspired by the Saeed Rustai film “Baradaran-e Leila,” Sasy used AI to reconstruct vocals from the film’s theme song by Ali Dousti. His latest satire of Iran’s state broadcaster IRIB advances his criticism in a novel fashion. Mocking IRIB children’s programming like the popular Fitileh show and its host Majid Ghannad, Sasy created a reconstructed religious woman named Leila who wears skimpy clothing as Layla when visiting Dubai, contrasting this with a woman named Sohaila whose name means “flirtatious.” This scenario points to the double lives led by some Iranian TV hosts. He also lampooned Iranian political conservatives’ rhetoric. Sasy’s new single “Baradaran-e Leila” is set to premiere on Radio Javan this Wednesday, November 29, 2023.
