On December 26, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced the addition of 1,400 electric buses to the Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation by April next year. In the initial phase, 100 non-AC electric buses were inaugurated at Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru to enhance public transport and combat rising vehicular pollution.
At the launch, Siddaramaiah highlighted the success of the Shakti scheme which provides free bus rides for Karnataka women. He said that women have taken 120 crore rides in buses for free since the launch.
He criticised the BJP for opposing the scheme and emphasised its positive impact on women's economic empowerment. The BMTC revealed plans to implement the Advance Driver Assistance System (ADAS) in 10 buses for passenger safety and driver awareness. The buses, with features like regenerative braking and a battery capacity of 298 kWh, aim to promote sustainable and secure transportation. Additionally, 3,000 drivers will undergo training for traffic control and adherence to road regulations.
