Things can change rapidly in the world of professional sport.
In 2022 Gustav Iden was on top of the world. He clinched the first ever PTO Tour race at the Canadian Open, won his match up at the Collins Cup and clinched an Ironman World Championship in Kona to finish the year.
2023, however, could not have been more of a contrast. The loss of his mother coincided with difficulties on the race course, including being left out of the Norwegian team at the Paris Olympics test event, leaving his hopes of making the Olympics in 2024 in tatters.
He arrived in Singapore for the PTO Asian Open knowing he was not at his best but hoping to at least round off the year with signs of improvement. What unfolded would only cap off a year to forget for the Norwegian superstar.
