In this episode of Crime Suspect, the topic of the intense scrutiny on armed police officers' use of fatal force iis discussed. The Metropolitan Police Commissioner, Sir Mark Rowley, has called for urgent reforms to make things fairer for officers who can face years of scrutiny over their handling of life and death incidents. The issue at hand is whether this scrutiny is making it impossible for armed police officers to do their jobs effectively and if it is compromising public safety.

The discussion centred around the fact that armed police officers face extensive legal backlash and scrutiny when involved in fatal incidents. In contrast, there have been six terrorists shot dead in four major incidents in London since 2017, and not a single firearms officer was arrested or subjected to long probes by the Independent Office for Police Conduct. The question then arises: why should armed police officers face more scrutiny than those dealing with terrorists?

One argument is that the current level of scrutiny restricts armed police officers from using their powers properly. The fear of legal consequences and years of investigation can prevent them from effectively facing suspects who may be armed. The process of scrutiny, which involves discipline, inquiry, inquest, and criminal proceedings, can take years to complete, leaving officers on restricted duties and unable to use their firearms in the meantime.

Former armed police officer, Tony Long, who has faced extensive scrutiny and stood trial for the murder of Azelle Rodney before being acquitted, shared his experience. He explained how the scrutiny affected him and questioned whether it was fair. Long's case highlighted the issue of timing and the need for more efficient and quicker scrutiny in investigations.
