The border between Latvia and Russia is the 217-kilometer-long international boundary that separates the territories of Latvia (a member of the European Union) and Russia (a member of the Commonwealth of Independent States). In its current form, it has not changed from 1945 to the present, when Estonia was part of the Soviet Union. Access to the border area is restricted on the Russian side.

Ludza has 8,300 inhabitants and its population is 57% Latvians and 35% Russians. It is one of the oldest towns in the country. It is mentioned in documents from the 12th century and the Livonian Order had one of its main strengths here. Many of its older wooden buildings are in good condition.
Zilupe has 1,500 inhabitants and is located about 2 km west of the Russian border. The E22 highway, which connects Riga with Moscow, passes through the south of the town and the Latvian national railway passes through its center, which today ends in this town. and connects it with two daily trains to Riga.
Aglona has 800 inhabitants and is famous in Latvia and beyond for its Basilica of the Assumption, the most important Catholic church in the country. The church and monastery were founded by the Dominican Fathers in 1700. The sanctuary was visited by Pope John Paul II in September 1993 and more than 300,000 pilgrims gathered at that time. Pope Francis visited him in September 2018.
Dagda is a city of 1,800 inhabitants located on the eastern slopes of the Latgale Highlands, next to Lake Dagda and the Narūta River. In March 1972, the deepest freezing of the soil in Latvia was recorded in Dagda, with 1.5 meters. The center of Dagda has been burned several times, but it has always been rebuilt.
