Eric J. Kezirian, MD, MPH discusses drug-induced sleep endoscopy, an evaluation technique for patients with obstructive sleep apnea considering treatment with surgery or oral appliances. This video discusses drug-induced sleep endoscopy and presents examples showing the range of findings that he sees in drug-induced sleep endoscopy in his patients. Dr. Kezirian is one of the world's experts in drug-induced sleep endoscopy and surgery for obstructive sleep apnea and snoring. He has performed over 1000 drug-induced sleep endoscopy examinations and developed the VOTE Classification with two European colleagues that is the standard approach to evaluating findings of this evaluation. He has also led research defining how best to use drug-induced sleep endoscopy to improve selection of procedures and outcomes of surgery. The VOTE Classification was named because obstructive sleep apnea can be caused by the following structures: Velum, or soft palate (roof of the mouth) Oropharyngeal lateral walls (side of the throat) Tongue Epiglottis Standard sleep studies are essential for diagnosing obstructive sleep apnea, but they do not provide key information to guide treatment with sleep surgery or oral appliances. The purpose of drug-induced sleep endoscopy is to understand more clearly what is causing the blockage of breathing in obstructive sleep apnea. Dr. Kezirian uses these findings to deliver the best results for his patients. Dr. Kezirian offers appointments in person or via telemedicine. He can review videos of drug-induced sleep endoscopy videos performed by other surgeons to discuss treatment options with patients.
