DENJIRO: Today, I’d like to show you a unique device invented by the genius scientist Nikola Tesla. It’s called the Tesla turbine. I have a model of it here. Let’s blow some wind at it.
BOY: How is it spinning?
NARRATOR: Turbines are used at power plants as well. They’re machines that spin when wind hits the blades.
DENJIRO: However, the turbine invented by Tesla is one that simply has many discs stacked together. There are no blades that the wind could hit. So why does it spin when it doesn’t have blades? Let me explain using this device. There is a large disc with a smaller disc hanging above it. There is only a few millimeters of space between the two discs. As you can see, I can slide a piece of paper in between. Now, let me spin the large disc.
GIRL: The small disc started spinning!
BOY: Why does it spin when they’re not touching?
DENJIRO: What’s happening is, the spinning force of the large disc is transmitted to the small disc through thin layers of air. This is due to the viscosity of air. The Tesla turbine makes use of this viscosity. By sending in air from the side, the wind starts to spin and leaves the turbine from the hole in the center. The turbine doesn’t simply move a disc using the viscosity of air. By placing multiple discs close to each other, they are spun efficiently.
If we attach a motor to this turbine, we can generate electricity. Tesla decided to focus on the very weak viscosity of air, and by making the structure very simple, came up with the idea of a turbine with no blades.
