How to Use a Rockfish Descender Device

The Ocean Awesome team describes the importance of having a descender device while fishing for rockfish and show how to use the SeaQualizer descender device to safely release rockfish at an appropriate depth. Descender devices are an important tool to use while fishing for rockfish in deeper water to safely release fish experiencing barotrauma at a depth where they can swim back down to the bottom. Barotrauma is caused by the change in pressure while reeling a rockfish from a deep depth to the surface which causes the fish’s swim bladder to expand, often several times its normal size. Signs of barotrauma include bulging eyes and protruding stomach from mouth. Without a descender device the fish is unable to swim down and if thrown back at the surface will be unable to swim down and will die. Descender devices are a MUST have when fishing for rockfish.
