With cultural practices from all over the world and dozens of languages spoken, the area has long been the starting point for new Londoners.
We spoke to Dr Anne Witchard from the University of Westminster about London's original Chinatown in Limehouse.
She talks about the difficulties faced by Chinatown's original residents, the Chinese sailors working the trade routes at the end of the 19th century.
But what about the Chinese community in London now?
For photographer Michael Tsang, identity is important.
Michael was born in Britain to Chinese parents.
After being intrigued by his own parents journey to the UK he set out on a photographic project to document the heritage, identity and aspirations of British Born Chinese.
Here Mike reflects on what he discovered in the process.
