Mackerel is a very popular bait when it comes to sea fishing but its not only useful for targeting Rays and Sharks with big fillets or flappers, it's useful for smaller shoaling species too like Black Bream and Garfish. When targeting theses species you want to use smaller strips of mackerel and bait elastic it to size 1 baitholder hooks. To make this bait even better you can salt it to dehydrate it and dry it out. This improves it in 2 ways, firstly by making the bait tougher and more durable, allowing it to withstand and nuisance fish or crabs for a little longer and secondly it concentrates the oils in the fish giving your bait an extra potent scent. This technique will work with any fish fillets that you want to use as baits including Sardines and Blueys, so try it out and let me know what you catch.
