Eric Geboers (Honda) was maintaining a winning streak, overhauling Kurt Nicoll (Kawasaki) for second place and closing to within 12 points of Dave Thorpe (Honda). The first heat was held at the spectacular Lombardore track. Consistency over the two legs was lacking for most of the top contenders, would the 'old-firm' head the field
