A tank and armoured military vehicles were seen on Friday (January 13) driving along the road near Ukraine's eastern city of Bakhmut, a place of fierce fighting between Russian and Ukrainian troops.
Bakhmut has been the focus of a Russian assault aimed at capturing the entire Donbas region of eastern Ukraine.
Russia said on Friday that its forces had taken control of the salt-mining town of Soledar, which lies less than 10 km (6 miles) northeast of the city of Bakhmut.
However, the spokesperson for Ukraine's eastern military command, Serhiy Cherevatyi, denied that Russian forces had seized control of Soledar. Reuters was not able to immediately verify the situation in the town.
The battles around Bakhmut and Soledar became what both sides called a "meat grinder" - a brutal war of attrition claiming the lives of thousands of soldiers.
The capture of Soledar, if confirmed, would mark Russia's first significant gain since last July. It follows months of Russian battlefield defeats and major retreats near Kharkiv in northeastern Ukraine and from Kherson in the south.
