This GIMP tutorial was requested by a How-to-GIMP member, and I'm using his images to demonstrate the method. I use GIMP 2.8 in this video shows two different methods you can use to replace the background in an image with another image.

•How to open both images as layers (00:16)
•How to make both layers the correct size (00:58)
•How to use Layer Masks to replace the background (03:08)
•How to use Color to Alpha to replace the background (07:35)
•How to save the final image as an XCF, or JPEG (11:22)
These methods are equally applicable to GIMP 2.8 and GIMP 2.6
