The title Kyorei (void bells) is also written as void spirits.
Kyorei is one of the Koden Three Pieces which came to Japan between 619 and 907 CE through Fudaiji temple.
Regarding the Chinese characters used in the title, kyo (void) signifies playing the shakuhachi (flute) and rei (bells) signifies the human spirit, human seed, laws of nature / universe.
Pǔhuà, the founder of Fuke zen sect, proselytized while ringing a large bell (duó).
This piece is said to be the sound of his bell simulated on the shakuhachi by Chohaku X. This is a piece to be played with the tranquility deep within one’s soul and with humility.
