Nagano Prefecture is so attractive
Nagano Prefecture is so attractive that it could be said that the entire prefecture is a tourist destination, a treasure trove of breathtaking autumn leaves! In Part 1 and Part 2, we will introduce 14 of the best autumn leaves viewing spots in Nagano Prefecture.
In the second part, we will cover a wide variety of autumn leaves viewing spots, from those with magnificent mountain scenery such as "Kamikochi," "Norikura Plateau," and "Kaida Plateau," which are at their best from mid-October, to those located in urban areas such as "Matsumoto Castle," a national treasure, and "Kumoba Pond, Karuizawa.

■Kamikochi ( Mid to late October )
Kamikochi, located in western Nagano Prefecture, is one of Japan's most scenic spots and is designated by the national government as a "Special Place of Scenic Beauty" and a "Special Natural Monument". The trekking course takes you to such scenic spots as Taisho Pond, Tashiro Pond, Azusa River, and Kappa Bridge, while enjoying the magnificent mountain scenery of the Hotaka Mountain Range and Yake-dake, which are the 100 greatest mountains in Japan.
■Norikura Kogen ( Mid to late October )
Norikura Kogen is located in the western part of Nagano Prefecture. Mt. Norikura is the third highest volcano in Japan (3,026 meters) after Mt. Fuji and Mt. Ontake. Its grandeur can be seen from various places in Norikura Kogen Plateau.
■Nomugi Pass ( Early to late October )
Nomugi Pass is located on the border between Nagano and Gifu prefectures, at an elevation of 1,672 m. Nomugi Pass is also known for its autumn leaves viewing spots, and the upside-down reflection of Norikura-dake on the surface of a reservoir is a wonderful sight.
■Kaida Kogen Plateau ( Late October - Early November )
Ontake, one of the 100 greatest mountains in Japan, can be seen from many viewpoints in Kaida Kogen, including Kuzo Pass, Kiso Horse Village, Jizo Pass Observatory, and Nagamine Pass. Ontake is the second highest volcano in Japan (3,067m) after Mt. Fuji.
■Matsumoto Castle, a National Treasure ( Late October - Early November )
Matsumoto Castle, located in the center of Nagano Prefecture, six-story castle tower and moon-viewing tower are connected to form an elegant and majestic complex. The entire area around Matsumoto Castle is designated as a national historic site and is one of the "100 Great Castles of Japan".
■Atera Valley ( Early to mid November )
Atera Valley was formed by the erosion of the Atera River, a tributary of the Kiso River that flows through the southwestern part of Nagano Prefecture. The emerald green water, beautiful forests of Kiso cypress, sheer rocks and pools, and the beauty of the natural formations are a sight to behold.
■Tadachi Falls ( early to mid November )
Tadachi Falls is the general name for a group of waterfalls in southwestern Nagano Prefecture, and has been selected as one of the "100 Best Waterfalls in Japan". Numerous waterfalls span the valley of the Otaki River, which flows through the southwestern part of Nagano Prefecture, and visitors can enjoy a 90-minute light hike up to Tenkawa Falls ( 40 m drop ), the main waterfall among them.
■Kumoba Pond ( Mid-October to early November )
Kumoba Pond in Karuizawa, famous for its villas, is a man-made pond created in the Taisho era (1912-1926) by damming up the Kumoba River, which flows from a spring. Especially during the autumn leaves season, the reflection of the maple trees along the lakeside on the surface of the water is a wonderful sight, making it one of the most popular spots in Karuizawa in the autumn season.
