A Bobwhite in my California neighborhood was unusual. They’re not native and are illegal to own for the most part. Therefore, it was a rare opportunity to hear this male Northern Bobwhite Quail call out and to briefly observe him. These quail are ground dwelling birds native to Canada, the United States, Mexico and the Caribbean. They live in open pine forests, overgrown fields, shrubby areas, farmlands and grasslands. It’s the only native quail in the east and it’s whistled “bob-white” call is a familiar sound in the spring and summer in the English countryside. They travel in coveys running from one shelter to another. The male’s color can vary considerably, but females look similar across their range. The Northern Bobwhite / Virginia Quail / Colinus Virginianus are from the New World Quail family, which includes Ruffed Grouse, Scaled Quail, Gambel’s Quail, Mountain Quail and the California Quail. The last of which happens to be the California State Bird, who would’ve been much more common to see or hear.
