The lydian dominant scale is one of the most flexible and reliable scales in music. Why? Because it can be used over nearly every instance of a dominant 7th chord and many instances of a major triad.
This means even when a chord change moves the progression outside the natural major/minor key, if it's a dominant 7th chord you'll know that lydian dominant is a safe and effective choice.
Not only that, but it's very easy to extract something meaningful and beautiful from lydian dominant, whereas other scales make you work hard to get any real juice from them.
