Staying with the “no dribbles” theme, showcased is Kobe turning baseline side upon receiving the post entry pass, elevating for that classic fadeaway jumper. He seemed to favor the left block. Contrary to right, turning left shoulder meant more mid-air torque/fade action was necessary for elbow realignment, making lift essential in these situations.

Kobe maintained a good balance between utilizing it spontaneously and using it on a predetermined basis. When his matchup overplayed, the turn and proceeding fade was automatic - 0:33, 1:54, 3:14. His defender squarely behind him, he often used that quick step-out to create space before elevating - 1:49, 3:30, 5:15. In these instances, it seems certain that Kobe had decided on the shot prior to the pass. He also took advantage of mismatches in this way, as smaller defenders had little chance of effectively contesting - 0:58, 4:00, 4:10. He kept the ball close to his side during the upward motion, making clean strips challenging.
