A four-day-old gorilla is attracting crowds at San Diego Zoo in California, as mother and son bond in public view.

The male infant was born early in the morning on December 26.

Its mother, Jessica, has had five other offspring, all of which are also male.

"Mum has been doing really great. She comes right up to the glass, she's holding her baby, she pats the baby all the time... nursing, if you're lucky you'll see nursing. The other troop members have been very curious. They come over and inspect the baby, but it pretty much just stays with mum at this point because it's so new. This baby is really important. Gorillas are endangered in the wild so every gorilla birth is important to the collection. Due to habitat loss in the wild, the species is definitely endangered in Africa," said Nerissa Foland, the zoo's senior keeper.

Caring for the infant is part of San Diego Zoo's larger goal to preserve the gorilla species, which is endangered in the wild due to continued loss of habitat.
