There are similarities between the sinuses and the gut. The need for a healthy gut microbiome has gotten lots of press in recent years. The less well understood piece is how important the sinus microbiome is, especially as it is so near to the brain and can potentially pass chronic inflammatory chemistry and even mycotoxins into the brain.

Just like the gut, the sinuses normally have many different types of microbes. Beneficial, pathogenic, or benign, and bacterial, viral, or fungal, they live together in a complex community surrounded by biofilm. If that community gets out of balance, it can cause problems.

In our patients we often see cognitive issues, brain fog, depression, anxiety, hormonal issues (sex hormones and thyroid especially) and sleep issues associated with a dysbiosis of the sinuses, in addition to symptoms of sinus infection.

Just as with our general treatment, we do testing to see what imbalances, infections, or colonization a patient has as part of their unique health picture.

We then use the Four Rs for the sinuses to help them back into the Healing Cycle.

✔️ Remove the pathogens and other inflammatory triggers.
✔️ Replace the sinus lining so that the natural protection of the sinuses can work as it should.
✔️ Rebalance the beneficial flora in the sinuses.
✔️ Repair by bringing inflammation down, modulating the immune response, and repairing the mitochondria in the sinuses.
