The trigger thumb occurs in children when the tendon that controls thumb movement becomes enlarged, making it difficult for it to glide smoothly through its sheath (a protective covering). As a result, the thumb may lock in a bent position and then suddenly release with a snapping or popping sensation. Common symptoms include stiffness, and a clicking or catching feeling when moving the thumb. While a similar condition in adults can be caused by repetitive thumb movements, injury, or underlying health issues such as diabetes or rheumatoid arthritis, the cause in children is not clearly known. Treatment options range from watchful waiting or splinting to surgery in severe case to release the tendon sheath.
