Mother Teresa was born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu in Macedonia, on August 26, 1910. At the age of eighteen, she left her parental home in Skopje and joined the Sisters of Loreto, an Irish community of nuns with missions in India. After a few months’ training in Dublin she was sent to India, where on May 24, 1931, she took her initial vows as a nun. From 1931 to 1948 Mother Teresa taught at St. Mary’s High School in Calcutta. In 1948, moved by the plight of the destitute and deprived, she devoted herself to working among the poorest of the poor in the slums of Calcutta. She started an open-air school for slum children and was soon joined by voluntary helpers, and financial support was also forthcoming. This made it possible for her to extend the scope of her work.

Two years later, in 1950, she founded the Missionaries of Charity - an order through which she made it her life's work to care for those in need. The Mother House of the Missionaries of Charity, located at 54A, A.J.C. Bose Road, Calcutta, became the headquarters of the international religious congregation of the Missionaries of Charity. It is here that Mother lived, prayed, worked and guided her religious family of sisters spread across the world.

In 1952 she established Nirmal Hriday (“Place for the Pure of Heart”), a hospice where the terminally ill could die with dignity. A decade later, the Indian government awarded Mother Teresa the Padma Shri for her services to the people of India. Pope Paul VI on his trip to India in 1964 gave her his ceremonial limousine, which she immediately raffled to help finance her leper colony. In 1979 she received the Nobel Peace Prize for her humanitarian work, and the following year the Indian government conferred on her the Bharat Ratna, the country’s highest civilian honour.
