STORYLINE:
A group of Iraqi National Guard officers and policemen in the southern town of Amarah pledged their support for the radical Shia cleric Moqtada al-Sadr on Thursday.

As a large crowd of Sadr supporters circled a mosque in the town centre one of the ING officers read a statement inside the building asserting that he and his men were prepared to support the al-Mahdi Army currently fighting against coalition forces in Baghdad and southern Iraq.

As he read the statement a group of Shiite clerics looked on.

It's unclear how many soldiers and police have transferred their allegiance.
