As the year 2024 approaches, the U.S. Census Bureau released figures on Thursday, saying that the global population has exceeded the 8 billion mark.
The bureau said the world's population grew by 75 million people over the past year.
While the United Nations estimated that the 8 billion threshold was passed in November 2022, announcing November 22nd as the "Day of 8 Billion", the U.S. Census Bureau suggested that the 8 billion mark was passed only in September this year.
It explained that the discrepancy is due to countries with large populations such as India and Nigeria not having conducted censuses in over a decade.
However, fertility rates are falling around the world, and the global population is getting older, with the world median age now at 32 and expected to hit 39 in 2060.
