Designed for Arabic teaching at universities, the textbook "Modern Arabic-With an introduction to main dialects" by E. Schulz counts as a standard textbook for Arabic at most German universities and far beyond the borders of Germany.
Vocabulary and grammar of the print version are based on an extensive frequency analysis with several million word places. The texts for the frequency analysis were based on the communicative aspects of history, society, religion, politics, sport, science, culture, literature and the like. a. m. selected.
It is not a matter of conveying what is particularly rare in Arabic, but of the important rules that are necessary for communication.
With regard to the later participation in Arabic courses in Arabic countries and to facilitate the search for grammatical phenomena also on the Internet, the common Arabic terminology is given.
The learners are empowered to master a wide variety of communication situations. Cultural, religious and historical knowledge is also imparted with the appropriate vocabulary in order to increase knowledge.
Particular attention is paid to conveying recurring expressions of the written and spoken language such as greetings, farewells, wishes, salutations, performances, well-being, apologies, proverbs and idioms.
Since nobody speaks High Arabic as a mother tongue, a completely new way of incorporating dialects is being followed. From lesson 4 onwards, dialogue texts in the form of modern high Arabic as well as in the dialect variants of the following main dialect areas are heard:
A. Iraq / Gulf / Arabian Peninsula B. Syria / Lebanon / Palestine C. Egypt D. Maghreb
The original content is preserved; however, the linguistic means of the respective dialect are used to express this content. There are also exercises for listening comprehension in dialect. This gradually enables learners to understand conversations in a dialect. It is expressly not the aim that the learners speak any dialect actively.
Those who successfully learn Arabic with this textbook should reach level A2 after lesson 12 and levels B1-B2 according to lesson 24 according to the European Framework of Reference for Languages (GER).
