Here are the basics to setting a formal table.

*STEPS*
0:20 Start off with some kind of table linen — a tablecloth, placemat, or runner.
0:25 Place a dinner plate or liner plate (also called a charger) to add a little height and border to the main dishes.
0:30 Place the salad plate on top of the dinner or liner plate.
0:34 If serving soup, place the soup bowl on top of the salad plate.
0:39 Place the utensils in order of usage from outer to inner. To the left of the plate, place the dinner fork; to its left, place the salad fork. On the right side, place the knife with the blade facing in, and then a soup spoon if needed to the right of the knife. The bottom rim of the utensils should be lined up with the bottom rim of the plate or charger.
0:59 If desired, place a small bread plate with a butter knife above the forks to the upper left of the dinner plate.
1:06 Place the dessert spoon directly above the dinner place setting, perpendicular with the handle facing to the right.
1:11 Place the water glass directly above the tip of the knife.
1:15 Place the wine glass at about a 45 degree angle to the right of the water glass, above the soup soon, if serving only one wine. If two wines are being served, place the second wine glass to the right of the first wine glass.
1:29 When setting for the dessert course, remove everything except the water glass and dessert spoon.
