Newborn giant baby pandas cubs in southwest China's Chengdu breeding research base spent their first day of the weekend on learning how to climb trees.

Their lesson started Saturday morning on the play area of the Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding Research Base. Although it was already winter in the city, the cozy 15-degree-Celsius temperature still made many of the nine "students" fall asleep quickly after they were brought outdoor.

As the big sister of the group, four-month-old giant panda cub Meng Meng stepped up to be the first climber. Even though, the vigorous baby girl showed impressive energy and skills in tree-climbing. The lack of strength in limbs still made her quit after climbing about half a meter up the tree trunk.

Ming Ming, a younger brother, joined Meng Meng a minute later. But the baby boy seemed to have no idea about what he was supposed to do and gave up quite soon.

According to researchers at the base, it normally takes months before a giant panda learns how to climb trees. It is a skill of the species to stay away from dangers in the wild.

A total of 42 giant panda were born in captivity worldwide this year, doubled the number of those born last year. One-third of the newborns are at Chengdu research base.

Zoologists say that China has more than 1,590 giant pandas in the wild and 376 giant pandas in captivity, and of those in captivity, 128 are now in the Chengdu base.

The giant panda, China's state treasure, is an endangered species and enjoys the first-class state protection, specialists said.
