Welcome Back Kotter star Robert Hegyes has died of a heart attack at the age of 60, after suffering chest pains at his home in Metuchen, New Jersey today.
According to his brother Mark, the American TV star, who starred alongside John Travolta in the classic 70s sitcom, was not in good health after suffering a heart attack a couple of years ago.
Though Robert had a long and successful television career, he was best known for playing Del Boy Trotter-esque Jewish Puerto Rican wheeler-dealer Juan Luis Pedro Phillipo de Huevos Epstein.
His performance as one of the tough remedial students known at the Sweathogs at the fictional James Buchanan High in Brooklyn helped the show win an Emmy nomination for outstanding comedy series in 1976.
Later in the show's run, the talented Jersey-born actor even became one of its directors.
The show ran for four seasons, finally coming to an end in 1979, and spawned merchandise including a comic book and action figures
