A subscriber asked about the differences between Sheol, Gehenna, and Hades. Sheol, Hades, and Gehenna are all terms the Bible uses for the location for where people go when they die. People often wonder if they all refer to the same place. If so, then why does the Bible use different words for the same place? Sheol is known as the realm of the dead where everybody, both the saved and unsaved people go to after they die. When Jesus died he released the Old Testament saints from Sheol to bring them with him to heaven, while unbelievers remain in Sheol, otherwise known as Hades in the New Testament. Gehenna was an actually valley Jesus uses as an illustration of what hell will be like. Eventually everybody, both humans and angels, who rebelled against God will be transferred from Hades to the lake of fire (Revelation 20).
