Holi is a festival in India that celebrates the triumph of good over evil and the beginning of spring, and commemorates several other Hindu stories. One person I met told me it's the day in India when your enemies become your friends. Then he aggressively smothered my face in color and gave me three hugs.
I've always wanted to celebrate Holi in India. So this year, just before I came back to the US, I took an overnight train to Vrindivan, the city of Krishna's childhood, where pilgrims travel from all over India (and the world) to worship and play. In my last forty-eight hours in India I wandered the streets of Vrindavan, making new friends, exploring temples, and getting pranked and covered in dye.
It turned out to be incredibly difficult to shoot this video. I didn't have a waterproof or dustproof camera and it's not a holiday where people notice that you're carrying an electronic device and decide to spare you. Once I got colored the first time, people assumed I was amenable, and even if I wasn't they didn't really care. They attacked me all day long and I had an incredible time. I left stained and completely soaked. I haven't checked yet, but either my camera or my lens is broken. At least it happened right at the end.
This video was shot in Vrindavan, India in March, 2014 on a Canon t2i with a 50mm and stock wide angle lens. The camera overheated a lot, which is normal for that model. I kept the camera semi-safe using a plastic bag and a lot of masking tape (couldn't find gaffer's tape in India), but it did stop working for a while and later I got a lot of dust in the lens. I haven't actually checked it out yet; I'm afraid it might be worse than I think it is.
