This was our first time in Bournemouth and it's been known to be one of the most popular beaches besides Cornwall. It's not too far from Central London, approximately 2-3 hour drive, and an additional 30-minute walk from the station to the pier. Buses are conveniently stationed next to the station if you prefer to use transport. Bournemouth Beach is usually packed during the weekends and especially during the summer months so it's best to plan ahead and book an coach (National Express) or train tickets at an earlier time. There are parking spaces along the beach which is also convenient for families travelling by car.
